On Monday, officials report from Kabul, Afghanistan, that the city¡¯s police were on a man hunt, chasing after a man who was suspected of murdering his wife. His motive? Many believe that it was due to his wife giving birth to a third daughter, Yahoo News reports.
The late mother, Storay (age 30), died last Wednesday in the Khan Abad district of the northern province Kunduz after giving birth to yet another baby girl. Her husband beat her to death, blaming her for not being able to bare them a son, police Sayed Sarwar Husaini said. The case was brought to local authorities by Storay¡¯s devastated father.
After further investigation, forensics found signs of torture on her body and strong evidence that proved Storay¡¯s motner-in-law was also involved in the murder. The mother-in-law was arrested, however the husband fled before authorities were able to find him. They are still searching.
Ten years after the US led troops into Afghanistan and brought down the Taliban regime, violence and abuse against women is still a part of Afghan society. The problem still remains as strong and terrifying as it was a decade ago.
In December alone, authorities found a young bride in her teens, locked in her husband¡¯s toilet for six months. She was abused, tortured and sexually assaulted with burn marks, severe bruises and fingernails pulled out.
Eighty-seven per cent of Afghan women have experience abuse in one form or another, whether it¡¯d be physical, sexual or psychological, reports British charity Oxfam.
